Creating an OEM Warranty

Step-by-step guide to creating free manufacturer warranties that activate automatically with qualifying purchases.

Creating an OEM Warranty

Dashboard → Warranties → Create → OEM Warranty

OEM warranties are free manufacturer warranties that activate automatically with qualifying purchases. Use these to track warranty obligations, support product registration, and manage serial numbers.

Note: OEM Warranty features require the Growth plan or higher. The Free plan does not include OEM registration.
Note: Before configuring your OEM warranty, review the common plan settings that apply to all warranty types (name, SKU, status, logo, and description).

When to Use OEM Warranty

  • You are the product manufacturer and want to track factory warranty obligations
  • You want customers to register products with serial numbers
  • You sell through third-party retailers and need cross-channel warranty registration
  • You want to build a direct relationship with end customers

OEM Warranty Configuration

After selecting OEM Warranty as the plan type, the price is locked at $0 — OEM warranties are always free to the customer.

Coverage Terms

Configure the manufacturer warranty period:

  • Duration — Coverage length matching your manufacturer warranty (e.g., 12, 24 months)
  • Price — Locked at $0.00 (cannot be changed)

Coverage Options

Same five toggles as Extended Warranty:

  • Manufacturer Defect (default: on)
  • Accidental Damage (default: off)
  • Wear and Tear (default: off)
  • Spill or Stain (default: off)
  • Lost or Stolen (default: off)

Registration Requirements

OEM-specific settings that control how customers register their products:

  • Require Product Registration — Customers must register before filing claims
  • Require Serial Number — Customers must enter a serial number during registration
  • Validate Serial Number — Serial must match your pre-loaded database
  • Enforce Uniqueness — Each serial can only be registered once
  • Allow Third-Party Registrations — Customers who bought from approved retailers can register

How OEM Warranty Works for Customers

OEM warranties do not appear as purchasable options on product pages. Instead, a policy is created automatically when a qualifying product is purchased. If registration is required, the customer receives a post-purchase email prompting them to register their product.

Saving Your Plan

Click Create Warranty in the title bar or at the bottom of the form. The system validates all fields and creates the plan. Unlike Extended Warranty and Shipping Protection, OEM warranties do not generate a Shopify product since they are free.
