Creating an Extended Warranty
Step-by-step guide to creating paid extended warranty plans that customers purchase at checkout or post-purchase.
Creating an Extended Warranty
Extended warranties are paid protection plans that customers purchase at checkout or post-purchase. They cover product issues that occur after the manufacturer’s warranty expires.
When to Use Extended Warranty
- You sell physical products with a manufacturer warranty window
- You want to offer paid protection beyond the factory coverage
- You want to generate recurring revenue from warranty attach rates
Extended Warranty Configuration
After selecting Extended Warranty as the plan type, configure these settings:
Coverage Terms
Add one or more coverage tiers. Each tier has:
- Duration — Coverage length in months (e.g., 12, 24, 36)
- Price — Flat dollar amount or percentage of product price
- Deductible — Optional per-claim or per-policy deductible amount
Coverage Options
Toggle which incident types are covered:
- Manufacturer Defect (default: on)
- Accidental Damage (default: on)
- Wear and Tear (default: off)
- Spill or Stain (default: off)
- Lost or Stolen (default: off)
Product Eligibility
Define which products qualify:
- All products
- Specific collections
- Individual products
- Tag-based rules
How Extended Warranty Appears to Customers
When a customer visits a product page, the warranty widget displays your coverage tiers as selectable options. The customer can choose a tier or decline coverage before adding the product to cart.
Saving Your Plan
Click Create Warranty in the title bar or at the bottom of the form. The system validates all fields, creates the plan, and generates a corresponding Shopify product.
